My Inane Blather Once Again

What to say, what to say. When I first heard that as an assignment I would be writing blogs, it sounded like a fun idea. Fortunately, hindsight is 20/20. Now, I am not trying to say that blogs are a bad idea; actually I still think its kind of fun. My problem with blogs is coming up with something to talk about; this is especially a problem for me since I am not a talkative person. When a subject comes up I may only have a small opinion. Until there is a counter-opinion, by then I have usually filled my opinion quota for that particular subject. Along with that completely unnecessary digression I most certainly do have a topic of conversation for this entry.

DISCLAIMER: POSSIBLE SPOILERS FROM THE NEW JAMES BOND MOVIE, IF YOU HAVE NOT SEEN THE MOVIE DO NOT READ UNLESS YOU REALLY DON’T CARE. My friends and I recently saw the new action flick, James Bond: Quantum of Solace. Normally after seeing a movie I would just talk about the extremely slick European cars, but excluding the opening scene the movie was filled with regular, American Fords. Since this subject was not necessarily applicable except to talk about the absence of European cars, we started to discuss the environmental aspect of the movie. My good friend the philosopher mentioned that the movie was “laced with references to the environment,” (Walrus 25). Some of the different references he was speaking of were the corrupt environmentalist, the politics of oil consumption, the fears of water shortage, and even the fuel cells at the hotel in the desert. The producers of James Bond clearly are trying to get our attention about different parts of the environment that most of us unknowingly are essentially giving away to the metaphorical Greene Planet. We are letting these absolutely essential parts of the environment whither away without any fight.

Be like James Bond, become part of the British secret service and kill any leads in a case. Once your done doing that you can fight for the water supply of the world and other environmental troubles, because as Neo says in a movie where he is not Neo, “If the Earth dies, [we] die.”

Dallas Woes

Recently I was reading the Sports section, of course, of the Dallas Morning News. There was an article by one of my favorite writers, Tim Cowlishaw. He wrote about the possibility that none of the four major professional sports teams in Dallas (Cowboys, Mavericks, Stars, and Rangers) make the playoffs this season. The Rangers already missed the playoffs after having a great season by today’s standards for the Rangers before the all-star break came and having one of the leagues best offenses. The Cowboys need a string of good wins before they can even be considered for the playoffs. The Mavericks started off 2-7 but have started to make a run, and the Stars are at the bottom of the Western Conference. It has been a long time since none of the teams made the playoffs in fact since the Stars came to Dallas it never happened.
This is a disappointing time to be a Dallas sports fan because even if we do make the playoffs it seems as though we get knocked out of the first round. Some people say that the run the stars made would break that trend, but all it seems to have done is take the playoffs out of the picture all together. Fortunately, the future can never be predicted, just speculated upon. This season Dallas is hoping that most speculation is wrong, rather than past seasons where we hope the speculations are right and they turn out to be wrong anyway. I guess that is the silver lining. Darn, no quote to end the blog this time. Wait, I have one, “In the sports world, no one is an expert.” A little more silver lining for Dallas fans.
